Fall in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado

For a number of years, some friends and I made our annual excursion down to the Crested Butte / Montrose area for some superb fall photography and this trip in the fall of 2013 was one of the best. We had all sorts of weather, snow, blue skies, rain, and electric sunsets. We also had a lot of down time so we had to get creative about how to spend some of our time, thankfully we never tired of one another and morale was always high! That Time I Won a Week Long Trip to Alaska

One of the more insane things that has ever happened to me personally was winning a trip to Wrangell-St. Elias National Park with five strangers in March 2012. Carl Donahue, owner of Expeditions Alaska, was our guide for the week and provided just enough sanity to get us through staying in a backcountry cabin with no running water or electricity. Mesa Arch Sunrise

was tired, grumpy, and impatient as we walked the short walk to Mesa Arch in Canyonlands National Park back in December. Why? Very selfish, prideful reasons really. I didn’t want to be at Mesa Arch because as I told Rick, “there is one shot, and everyone has taken it”. I was referring to the sunrise glow at Mesa Arch which, while beautiful, has been shot to death. So why wake up early in the morning to shoot something like Mesa Arch?

Go Visit Great Sand Dunes National Park Now!

It's no secret how much I love Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, in my opinion it's the most beautiful national park in Colorado. It is certainly the most unique experience! While I love how the sand dunes look and being flanked by the Sangre de Cristo mountain range only stands as an example of why it's the most beautiful national park, I will freely admit that there's not much to do at the sand dunes. So why is it the most beautiful?

A number of years ago I saw a really good article on The Denver Egotist about creative professionals who were writing letters to themselves when they first got started. It inspired me to write a letter to myself at the beginning of my photography journey, when I got my first film camera. I didn't know that getting a film camera was going to change my life, I just wanted to take better pictures. It's good to reflect on humble beginnnings, remember where you've been, and be thankful for where you are now.
