My Favorite Photos from 2014

With 2014 now a distant memory, I thought it would be a great time to go ahead and publish my favorite photos from 2014 because...well better late than never right? These photos are in no particular order but do represent some of my fondest memories during 2014, I'm blessed to spend many days and nights every year in the company of great friends taking photos of the beauty that is the created world. Enjoy!

The Castles - Gunnison, Colorado

The Castles outside of Gunnison, Colorado are a majestic geological feature and toward over the Ohio Creek valley. The whole Gunnison region is beautiful during the fall but on this day, the fog with the colors and the spectacular view was really quite special.

Lightning Storm - Wellington, Colorado

During the late spring and throughout the summer of 2014, I went storm chasing numerous times because I simply love taking photos of severe storms and especially lightning. This was an intense but small thunderstorm near Fort Collins, Colorado one night in July when the conditions were just right. We didn't get rained on, and for about 45 minutes this thunderstorm produced non-stop lightning.

Winter Blanket - Boulder, Colorado

The Greenbelt Plateau is one of my favorite winter locations to take photos because of the simplicity you find in the landscape out there. It's a short drive from Boulder and in the snow, these trees stand out starkly from the snow and the overcast skies. These photos remind me that often times; less is more.

Bear Lake Sunset - Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado

The setting sun illuminating Longs Peak as seen from Bear Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park one summer evening, a scene that I have actually never captured before because I'm usually in the area around sunrise. The glassy reflections of Bear Lake show off the immense beauty of the park!

Abstract Reflections - Telluride, Colorado

This probably seems like an odd choice for my favorite photos of the year but this one stands out because I was able to visualize an abstract reflection photo and it actually turned out. No camera tricks, no special editing techniques. I have been searching for a scene like this for a long time and I was thrilled to push my comfort zone and capture something that I wouldn't normally even consider.

Silver Jack Reservoir Fall Sunrise - Cimarron, Colorado

This photo probably shouldn't have happened. It was raining very hard on the other side of Owl Creek Pass, we were extremely sleep deprived, and my camera stopped working. Turns out that when everything is going wrong, sometimes you just have to persevere and push harder. We showed up to epic conditions at Silver Jack Reservoir, a lake that none of us had been to properly scout.

Sunflower Sunset - Denver International Airport, Colorado

Sunflower season is so much fun! It lasts for a few weeks in August and produces some of my favorite images every year. This year was no different but the summer rains prolonged the season slightly and allowed for this photo. The sky was all time on this evening, the sunflowers were just about perfect and it was just one of those times I was glad to be exactly where I was at that moment. Denver International Airport is just to the north of this photo.

Crystal Lake Reflections - Silverton, Colorado

Crystal Lake, near Ouray and Silverton on US Hwy. 550 was a special treat this fall, with the perfect reflections, and an amazing sky all combined for some unbelievable fall photos. This area is often flooded with photographers during this time of year, and I was happy that it was relatively quiet while we were there. Two days later, a snowstorm came through knocked all the leaves off the trees. Perfect timing!

So, which one is your favorite? Let me why in the comments!
