What was supposed to be a quick trip to Great Sand Dunes National Park turned out not to be, but with over 15” of fresh snow we made the most of the time spent in the mountains. One of the things I have learned doing photography, especially landscape photography, is that you need to be flexible and not hold on to any one thing too tightly. We still got our cameras out and even took pictures of some of the other inhabitants of the park.

Living in Gunnison, CO has its idiosyncrasies of being one of the coldest places in the United States. There is usually plenty of snow to play on but everyone's hygiene is questionable. It regularly gets below -20F but that also makes the lake ice at Blue Mesa Reservoir an amazing sight. Here I learned to seek a new perspective and look down, take in the details, and you might find something magical.

 I lived in the Gunnison/CB area for almost 9 years and every time I mentally kick myself for not taking advantage of photo opportunities better, the Gunnison River valley is home to some world class views and because I was so familiar with the views I thought "oh, I'm sure everything gets that photo" so I didn't take those "postcard" shots.
